Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet Review (Now 50% Faster)

Amazon Fire HD 8 offers 50% more RAM than Fire 7 for faster performance.

As measured in tumble tests, this tablet more durable than the latest iPad and 2x more durable than iPad mini 4 (and costs a lot less too).

In our list of Top 10 Best Tablets, it ranked at #1.

Design
Amazon Fire HD 8 comes with a bright and clear 8-inch screen with wide viewing angles. The left and right of the screen provide enough space to fit your thumb.

The plastics feel solid enough with ample texture to provide grip. Amazon even placed a tiny lip around the edge of the screen to help prevent cracking or scratching if you drop it.

Most of the buttons and connectors are on the top, if you hold it vertically, like a book. The power button and volume control also lie on one end, leaving the microSD card slot on the side, neatly covered by a flap.

A headphone jack on the top of the tablet allows you to listen to music and movies privately, and a microSD reader on the right of the slate lets you expand the device's memory by up to 400GB.

The tablet comes in four colors — Black, Canary Yellow, Marine Blue, and Punch Red.

Performance
Amazon Fire HD 8 adds a 2-megapixel front-facing camera with 720p video, support for up to 400GB additional storage via its microSD slot and hands-free Alexa support even when your screen is in standby mode.

Like the HD 10, the new HD 8 has access to the always-ready Alexa feature and Show Mode without being plugged in.

Thanks to hands-free Alexa, you can now talk to Amazon's digital assistant from across the room, or put the tablet in Show Mode to turn it into an Echo Show-type device.

Alexa worked well on the tablet, clearly interpreting and correctly answering any questions while the speakers can play music decently loud.
