Amazon Echo 2 Smart Speaker Review

Amazon Echo is one of the best portable speakers that can do more just producing quality sound.

It also allows you to make calls, set music alarms, timers, ask questions (calendar, weather, traffic, sports scores, etc), manage your to-do or shopping lists, control smart home devices, and more.

The most obvious visual difference between the new Echo and its predecessor is the device’s size.

Where this new design is short (89mm shorter) and stout, about two-thirds as tall as the first model, but with a slightly larger diameter. So it will take up less space on your shelf or kitchen counter.

While its new swappable decorative shells (available in charcoal fabric, heather gray fabric, sandstone fabric, walnut finish, oak finish, & silver finish) are also designed to make the device blend in with your home better.

There's an LED ring around the top edge of the Echo 2nd gen that turns blue when it's listening, and red when the microphone is off. On the top of the second-generation Echo is a button to activate Alexa and one to mute the microphone.

Compared to other smart speakers like Harman Kardon Invoke (under $132) or Sonos One (under $200), Echo 2nd Gen only deliver mediocre audio performance. But it is understandable considering that the price of Echo 2 (under $85) is much cheaper.

You can get similar sound quality from Aukey Eclipse ($52.99) but you will miss Alexa and voice control.

Echo 2nd gen also comes with the ability to output its audio to a larger speaker or stereo system over a 3.5mm auxiliary cable or Bluetooth.

The all-new Echo has 7 microphones arrayed on its top, and uses beamforming technology and noise cancellation to hear your voice, even with music playing.

The mics have been improved than on the original Echo ($79.99) and Echo Dot ($39.99) for better voice recognition, and they work better when music is playing at higher volumes.

While the call quality, even over the internet, is superb.

• Compatible with just about any smart devices you could have.
• Cheaper & smaller than the previous design.
• Good third-party support.
• More attractive design.
• Far-field mic array works wonders.
• Extensive Alexa voice assistant.
• Customizable appearance.

• Can activate accidentally.
• Limited number of music services supported.
• Volume-control buttons are inferior to the volume-control ring on the original.
